On February 8th The Spark Presents screened a film about Edward Hopper, distributed by Exhibition on Screen, a UK-based company that produces films about major art exhibitions around the world.
This film about Edward Hopper was made in conjunction with the Hopper retrospective at the Whitney Museum in 2023.
Following the screening Ned Reade, recently retired head of the art department at Trinity-Pawling School and teacher there for 45 years, shared some additional insights about Hopper and fielded questions from the audience.
Hopper grew up less than an hour away from Pawling in Nyack, NY. The house he grew up in is now a museum where you can look out his bedroom window at the Hudson River. As you stand in his bedroom you can see why light became an important theme in his work. The Hopper House Museum donated a pair of admission tickets which we gave away to an audience member through a drawing.
On February 9th The Spark Presents screened a film about John Singer Sargent, distributed by Exhibition on Screen, a UK-based company that produces films about major art exhibitions around the world.
The film about John Singer Sargent was produced in conjunction with the Sargent show, "Fashion and Swagger," at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, that was staged in 2023-34. Another major retrospective of Sargent’s work was about to open at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and this screening gave our audience the opportunity to brush up on Sargent before the 2025 show in NYC. The famous Madame X portrait is part of the Met’s own collection.
